Newsletter #5

Welcome 2024

Well, we didn't achieve our 2023 goal of consistently sending out a  monthly newsletter to our friends and family, but we're going to try it again. It wont be consistent, and it might not be monthly, but there will be 12, hopefully evenly timed out, newsletters this year.

What We're Reading

Small Business Management - Longenecker - Petty - Palich - Hoy

I haven't gotten a lot of reading done since I started teaching in the fall. I am now a part-time adjunct instructor at Dona Ana Community college in New Mexico, and am reading/rereading the textbook.

It's an asynchronous online course, which means there are no class meeting times, instead students are provided with content and assignments. I create assignments and guide them through the course with announcements, recorded instruction, and calls/emails to answer any questions.

It's been pretty cool. The book isn't bad. I recommend it if you want some practical high level info on starting/running a business.  - Eddie

Are you looking for a new job??

Aside from doing the worm, the splits, and karaoking Rage Against the Machine at weddings, Kassidy + JoJo also happen to be the best resume revampers in the state of Texas, maybe even in the world. In 2023, they revamped 30+ resumes and even helped one of the Bachelor’s from previous seasons get a new job…that one wasn’t a joke.

It’s your turn to let us get your shit poppin’. Email your resume and what kind of position(s) you’re looking for to kassidy@acesresumes.com

We Bought a House! (Townhouse)

We weren't really looking to move or buy a house but in August while hosting an open house with Joel Bernal, we saw this super cheap condo in the Riverside area, near the apartment we lived in at the time. We were on our way to a pool party at Ari's house and decided to stop by and see what the deal was. The condo wasn't for us, but as we were leaving, we saw a FOR SALE sign in the window of a townhouse nearby. One thing led to another and a month later it was ours, and we were scrambling to get our apartment subleased. Shout to to Joel, our real estate agent, you can reach him at iconrealty@joelbernal.com if you're interested in buying. Also, thanks to Jorge Madrid, our good friend and Loan Officer who helped with financing.

We're located on the East Side of 35 directly across from St. Edwards University, about 4 exits south of downtown.

If anyone has any experience repairing Saltillo tile, we'd love to hear your experience or advice. Or if anyone knows someone who can demolish and remove Saltillo tile on the cheap, let me know.

This is it.

Homebuyer's Workshop

I'm cohosting a homebuyers workshop at the end of the month at Praxis Coffee Roasters (inside Lustre Pearl East) with Jackie Cross, on February 29th at 6pm.

Please send this invite along to anyone you know in the Austin area who may be interested in buying their first (or even next) home.

What's on the Agenda?

Understanding the Market: Dive into the latest trends of Austin's real estate market.

Financing Demystified: Explore financing options that make sense for professionals like you.

Navigating the Process: Step-by-step guidance to transform you from a market observer to a confident buyer.

Q&A Session: All your burning questions answered in a candid, no-pressure environment.

Post-workshop, let's keep the conversation flowing at Luster Pearl next door. It's a great opportunity to mingle, share experiences, and chat with other future homeowners like you and some local experts.

What We're Watching

Veep

I think Jen and I were looking for something to watch together before going to bed, and I remembered this show being pretty funny. Then like with most shows, Jen fell asleep and I left her behind as I burned through seven seasons in like two weeks.

Its about Senator Meyers whose failed run for president lands her a spot as the Vice President of the United States. The show follows her as she puts out political fires, juggles her private and personal life, and tries to one day become president.

The fun part about this show is that all of the characters are terrible people. Meyer is described as "a perfect combination of ineptness and amorality". Her staff is bumbling and overwhelmed. Her fellow politicians are the stereotypical self-serving egomaniacs.

Its both feminist and women hating, racially progressive and racists, offensive and hilarious.

I liked it - Eddie

Killers of the Flower Moon

"Real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal as Mollie Burkhart, a member of the Osage Nation, tries to save her community from a spree of murders fueled by oil and greed. "

I wanted to see this movie as soon as it was released but all I kept hearing from people was "yeah, but it's three hours" or "yeah, but when am I supposed to find three hours to watch it".

That's all ridiculous, this movie was great. The story continually moved along and they didn't waste any scene's with long drawn out pauses for emotion.

That being said, they should bring intermissions back in theaters. - Eddie

Vampire Diaries

I (Jen, alone) am re-watching the Vampire Diaries. Seemed appropriate for a dark and rainy, and plus I was sick half the month, so bring on the guilty comfort pleasures. It's different take on vampirism, and the pilot episode is great for fact that they make fun of Twilight and say that they did it all wrong. It's fun, dramatic, sexy, and 100% ridiculous. And the music in the show...absolute time capsule!
