Chihuahua Olive's Benefit Happy Hour @ Nickel City

Mark your calendar for Friday, June 6th, Party Mike will be manning the cash bar.

Come to Nickle City and every dollar you spend at the CASH bar in the back will go to help pay for Olive's medical bills. She's going to be fine but has to get a couple of operations. The contributions will be coming from the cash bar so make sure to bring cash!

All proceeds above Olive's medical bill will be donated to Austin Pets Alive!

Bailey & Sarah & the twins got a house!

Congrats to the Metcalfe family on closing on their new house in Lockhart! Joel Bernal and I got him a sick deal (let me know if you need one too).

Hopefully details on the house warming party will be coming soon.

We Been Eating

It was Crawfish season

Sarah Metcalfe made a BUNCH of crawfish at the brewery - it was awesome! Thanks Sarah!

We've Been Cooking

We caught a case of the munchies on April 20th and came up with this masterpiece - summer sausage tacos.

Summer sausage, onions, cilantro, cheese, and home made chile de arbol sauce. 10/10, two thumbs up (at the time)

We have not tried to recreate this again, yet.

What We're Reading

Eddie read Diary, by Chuck Palahniuk

It's aight. Quick read but its the type of story that all comes together at the end, so it was a bit confusing. I bet it would make a great movie.

Misty Wilmot has had it. Once a promising young artist, she’s now stuck on an island ruined by tourism, drinking too much and working as a waitress in a hotel. Her husband, a contractor, is in a coma after a suicide attempt, but that doesn’t stop his clients from threatening Misty with lawsuits over a series of vile messages they’ve found on the walls of houses he remodeled.

Suddenly, though, Misty finds her artistic talent returning as she begins a period of compulsive painting. Inspired but confused by this burst of creativity, she soon finds herself a pawn in a larger conspiracy that threatens to cost hundreds of lives. What unfolds is a dark, hilarious story from America’s most inventive nihilist, and Palahniuk’s most impressive work to date.

Jen's reading

It Ends With Us - I LOVED this book. It's heartbreaking because abuse, mental and physical, happens to people in relationships all the time. I hope the Colleen Hoover is able to save as many lives as she can with this story. Make sure to read the editor's note if you want the tears to really kick in. And if you know someone who is in an abusive relationship, help them get out, please!

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up — she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan — her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

It Ends With Us - the sequel is not necessary,  but why would you not want to find out what happens? I am also not posting any spoilers, so I'm not even going to post the description.

What We're Watching

Love & Death

Seven episode series on HBO Max.

Two churchgoing couples enjoy small town family life in Texas - until somebody picks up an axe.

We thought this was a pretty good show and worth a full Sunday binge. Its the true story of Candy Montgomery, the Wylie, Texas housewide accused of murdering her lover's wife, Betty Gore in June 1980.

It was filmed in and around Austin to recreate the small town vibe. Elizabeth Olsen is great, as well as all of the other characters.

What We're Listening To - Podcasts

Eddie

I thought this was interesting because I had been seeing a lot of videos from the migrant situation in El Paso, didn't have much of an idea of what was going on, and saw a lot of random information being thrown around.

Mr. Ballen - Strange, Dark, and Mysterious

This podcast is a mix of true crime and spooky stories. The format is either one story or three stories in about 30 - 45 minutes, so you can usually time it into a car ride or break in your day.

What We're Listening To - Music (Jen)

We had a hiccup on this section last time, and Eddie sent without double-checking!

Fun Facts

March 3rd was the Master of Puppets 37th anniversary -  The band's 1986 song “Master of Puppets” has reached No. 40 the Billboard Hot 100, scaling the singles chart for first time since its release 36 years ago. The title track from their third studio album was featured in the season finale of Stranger Things' fourth season - which is pretty freaking awesome. RIP Eddie Munson, and if you have not seen Stranger Things, are really missing out, and you have until 2024 to catch up.

New Music Out

Boys Club for Girls debut album - a group I know who has been working in the music industry for a long time, and have finally released the perfect album. They have a video called 5 o'clock shadow that they pieced together with interviews from recovering alcoholics. From their Instagram: A while back we shot a music video with some incredible people from the sober community in Nashville. We asked them why they started using and why they stopped. It was powerful, intense and brave. Finally, in honor of mental health awareness month, and with the support of our friends at @fundrecovery we will release our video for our song “ 5’O Clock Shadow” on 5/19.

SXSW snippet

One of my favorite American rock bands was hosting some free shows at SXSW. My favorite kind of show ;)

Sunflower Bean https://open.spotify.com/track/6WGnIpVtdJuw5GP9KRwdmL?si=637acbd71bce42df

Sudan Archives - another free showcase, and seeing her live was such an experience! She was solo, looping mixes, dancing while playing the violin, and it was magical. She totally gave me Queen of the Damned vibes, and I was loving it!

Movies

GUY RITCHIE’S THE COVENANT

During the war in Afghanistan, a local interpreter risks his own life to carry an injured sergeant across miles of grueling terrain.

Pro's:
The movie was pretty bad ass, lots of cool battle scene's and loud noises.

Con's:
They stretched out some of the scenes too long and how are we supposed to beleive that a 42 year old man is out on the battlefield?
